The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Delbert X. Lane (ASN: RA-13233102), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that night of that date his company’s defensive positions were subjected to a fierce assault by numerically superior enemy forces. Sergeant Lane, a rifle squad leader, constantly exposed himself to the extremely heavy enemy fire in order to control the defensive tactics of his men. Throughout the night his fearless actions under enemy fire inspired his squad to hold their positions against overwhelming attacks. The frontage defended by his squad was of such size and importance that is normally would have been assigned to a larger unit. Although his squad had been depleted by casualties he held his ground, beating off the repeated enemy attacks. His aggressive and inspirational leadership enabled his squad to accomplish its mission and undoubtedly prevented the enemy from penetrating the company’s perimeter. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Lane reflects the highest credit upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
