The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Fred B. Lamp, Jr. (ASN: 0-2262423), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 March 1951 in the vicinity of Chigu-ri, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Lamp was assigned the mission of assaulting the last of a series of enemy strong points. Although his men were greatly outnumbered by the enemy, they immediately responded to his inspiring leadership and advanced toward the hostile position. When the unit was halted by intense enemy machine gun fire, Lieutenant Lamp, with complete disregard for his personal safety, assaulted the hostile emplacement. Throwing grenades and directing close fire into the bunker, he succeeded in destroying it and killing its crew. Although wounded by enemy fire, Lieutenant Lamp refused evacuation and continued leading the assault until the objective was secured. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Lamp reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
