The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Joe B. Lamb (ASN: 0-62266), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 September 1950, near Morea-san, Korea, Captain Lamb’s company was assaulting a mountain strongly defended by the enemy. After directing the fire of his mortars on the hostile emplacements, he calmly advanced through a deadly hail of small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire, skillfully deployed his support platoon, and then moved up the steep slope to the forward elements. Despite constant exposure to withering fire, he inspired his men to maximum effort, led them successfully over the crest, secured the position from possible counterattack and, through a barrage of bursting shells, assisted in the evacuation of the wounded. Captain Lamb’s intrepid leadership, tactical skill and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
