The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert D. Lacaze (ASN: 0-1329492), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 24 February 1951, in the vicinity of Soun-ni, Korea. On that date he was leading his platoon in an attack on Hill 715 and had succeeded in reaching the lower crest of the ridge when the enemy opened fire with automatic weapons and machine guns, wounding Lieutenant Lacaze. Ignoring his painful wound and refusing evacuation, he led his platoon in four assaults on the enemy position. Each time the charge was beaten back by devastating enemy fire. During the withdrawals, he fearlessly exposed himself to the enemy while assisting wounded comrades to safety. The platoon formed again, and, inspired by the courageous leadership of Lieutenant Lacaze, stormed the ridge and routed the enemy. After the position had been secured Lieutenant Lacaze allowed himself to be evacuated, approximately six hours after being wounded. The dauntless courage and outstanding leadership of Lieutenant Lacaze reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
