Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (October 17, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Wallace A. Kydland (ASN: 0-1013231), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 2d Reconnaissance Company, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongson, Korea. On this date the 2d Reconnaissance Company had the mission of protecting the left flank of the Division. At 0530 hours the enemy launched an attack with numerically superior force and drove the Third Platoon from its position. When Captain Kydland arrived at the scene of the action, he organized an attacking force consisting of the depleted Third Platoon and the Second Platoon and, although heavily outnumbered, launched a counter-attack to regain the commanding terrain that had been lost. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he led the assault against heavy enemy machine gun and small arms fire, and inspired his men with his daring and skillful leadership. In the final assault on the enemy main position, Captain Kydland personally led six men with fixed bayonets in a determined charge up the hill and drove the enemy from the key positions. The attack planned and led by Captain Kydland resulted in inflicting approximately 114 casualties upon the enemy, regained the lost ground, and eliminated a threat to the Division left flank. The gallantry displayed by Captain Kydland on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
