The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Amos D. Kunz (ASN: US-56093342), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, Corporal Kunz, a squad leader of a machine gun platoon, was attached to a rifle company in an attack on an enemy-held hill. In the course of the advance, the unit was subjected to intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. Corporal Kunz, realizing the lack of fire power, carried his machine gun to an advanced position and laid down an effective base of fire, destroying an enemy machine gun emplacement and inflicting numerous enemy casualties. As a result the remainder of his unit was able to advance and secure its objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Kunz reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
