The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Kenneth E. Kunkel (ASN: RA-19146293), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Service Company (then Company B), 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Wondong-ni, Korea. On that date Company B launched an attack on a strategic hill held by a well entrenched and determined enemy force. As the unit advanced toward the objective, the ammunition supply ran dangerously low. Sergeant Kunkel unhesitatingly volunteered to return to the supply point for ammunition. Completely ignoring all danger to his own life, he traveled over terrain exposed to enemy fire and returned with the critically needed ammunition. Realizing more would be needed, he started on a second trip, but during this attempt, he was wounded by enemy fire. His selfless and courageous action inspired the company to continue their advance and successfully complete their mission. The heroism in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Kunkel reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
