The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Staff Sergeant Dale A. Sievert, United States Army, for heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Sievert distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 13 June 1970 while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company A, 3d Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment. On that date, the company was conducting a relief mission in support of a friendly element near Hiep Duc when it came under intense enemy fire. In the initial burst of hostile rounds, the friendly point man was seriously wounded. Reacting immediately to the urgency of the situation, Sergeant Sievert unhesitatingly led an assault against the hostile positions in order to safely extract the injured man. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he remained exposed to the enemy fire until the hostile fusillade was effectively neutralized. Despite the continued danger, Sergeant Sievert remained in his vulnerable position until his wounded comrade was safely withdrawn. Through his timely and courageous actions, he contributed greatly in saving the life of his fellow soldier and served as an inspiration to his entire unit. Staff Sergeant Sievert’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
