The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Brigadier General Leo Myron Kreber (ASN: 0-171657), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services as Artillery Commander, 37th Infantry Division in the South Pacific Area from 10 June 1942 to 6 August 1943. His accurate anticipation of problems peculiar to jungle fighting and his zeal in promoting realistic, rigorous training in the Fiji Islands and on Guadalcanal, was responsible in a large measure for the superb showing of his artillery in the New Georgia campaign. The artillery units overcame formidable obstacles and paved the way for infantry troops by softening Jap strong points which had withstood repeated attacks. The extreme closeness of jungle operations made it necessary to shell the enemy within a few short yards of American troops, a feat that was performed with consistent accuracy. Brigadier General Kreber’s skill and resourcefulness contributed much to the speed and success of his division’s mission. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Brigadier General Kreber and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
