The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank T. Kowalczyk (ASN: RA-12395494), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 14 June and early morning hours of 15 June 1953, in the vicinity of Chat-Kol, Korea, United Nations elements attempting to drive an enemy force from the friendly main line of resistance were subjected to heavy enemy mortar and artillery barrages and sustained many casualties. Despite the increased intensity of the bombardment, Private Kowalczyk repeatedly left the shelter of the trenches and exposed himself to the fire to remove the wounded soldiers to safety. With complete disregard for his personal welfare, he courageously continued to aid and comfort the casualties and assisted in the evacuation of several to aid stations. Private Kowalczyk’s brave actions alleviated much suffering and saved the lives of a number of United Nations personnel. Private Kowalczyk’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
