The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Louis Korchek (ASN: 0-66520), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 15 June 1953 in the vicinity of Chat-Kol, Korea, Company F, 2d Battalion, of which Lieutenant Korchek was a platoon leader, had the mission of counterattacking and regaining control of positions overrun by the enemy in earlier action. He was attempting to clear the trenches of enemy soldiers when a flare revealed an opening in the trench. Lieutenant Korchek immediately led two of his men through the trench despite the fact that the enemy soldiers were throwing grenades and firing repeatedly at him and his men. He led the men toward the numerically superior force, firing his carbine, then throwing grenades, and finally using his bayonet against the foe. After destroying the hostile group he jumped out of the trench and directed friendly fire at the remainder of the enemy in the vicinity. As a result of his actions, the hostile force was repulsed from the sector until a larger friendly force took over the position of Lieutenant Korchek’s platoon. Lieutenant Korchek’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
