The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Dale Weidell Klinger (ASN: US-52074924), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 June 1952, near Tumyong-dong, Korea. During a Company K assault on Hill 191 Sergeant Klinger’s machine gun squaw met such heavy fire from the enemy that they were forced to seek cover. Seeing that his squad was unable to fire effectively or advance from their covered area, Sergeant Klinger picked up his machine gun, moved into an exposed position, and brought direct, accurate fire on the enemy. As a result, the rest of his squad was able to advance nearer the entrenched enemy. When they had come to within seventy-five yards of the hill they were again stopped by enemy grenades and small arms fire. Undeterred by the danger to himself, Sergeant Klinger seized a supply of hand grenades and started throwing them at the enemy troops above. Head time he threw a grenade he would advance a few steps and his squad followed with their supporting fire. Utilizing this tactic Sergeant Klinger’s squad drove the enemy from their entrenchments, inflicting heavy casualties on the fleeing troops. After the hill had been secured Sergeant Klinger supervised setting up defensive positions from which his squad helped repulse a counterattack which came that night. Sergeant Klinger’s gallantry in the face of the enemy reflects great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Army.
