Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 533 (December 27, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Major (Quartermaster Corps) Laurence R. Hipp, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Regimental Supply Officer for the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, from 18 July to 5 August 1943. Although he had untrained assistants and a limited number of vehicles at his disposal, he executed a multitude of difficult supply tasks expeditiously and efficiently. When the Japanese closed in on his forward ration dump, the supply route to the rear was blocked and evacuation of the wounded was impossible. Major Hipp not only protected the injured but so capably directed the defense of his small garrison that the enemy was repulsed in its attacks on his position. Despite added burdens and obstacles, he kept the units adequately supplied, moving with the forward echelon as it advanced to the beach at Munda. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Major Hipp and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
