Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 315 (September 12, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Paul P. Kinsfather (ASN: RA-20943637), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 23 January 1952 in the vicinity of Sindae-Dong, Korea. On that date Sergeant Kinsfather was a member of a platoon sized patrol with orders to assault and occupy “Henry Hill”, then in enemy hands. As the patrol progressed, it came under an intense hail of enemy machine gun and mortar fire. Due to the volume of hostile fire, the patrol was ordered to return to friendly lines. As the unit began its withdrawal, the enemy mortar barrage shifted back along the platoon’s route. The men became demoralized by the extremely heavy volume of fire and began to become panicky, which placed them in imminent danger of annihilation. Sergeant Kinsfather, with utter disregard for personal safety, braved the rain of shells to go from man to man, encouraging them, giving instructions, and guiding them to the safest route of withdrawal. Through this daring display of coolness and bravery under fire, the men of the unit were able to return to friendly lines with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Kinsfather reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
