The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Cavalry) F. Raymond King (ASN: 0-377203), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 22 April 1945. While attacking Mt. Malepunyo, the advance of the 8th Cavalry Regiment was held up by intense enemy sniper, mortar, and machine gun fire from concealed weapons. Colonel King, Commanding Officer of the 1st Squadron, fearlessly employed the radio of the forward mortar observer and, while in an exposed position, directed fire at the Japanese positions with such success that the squadron could advance. Colonel King, however, was fatally wounded by machine gun fire. Through his sound judgment and courageous action, and with complete disregard for personal safety, Colonel King made a vital contribution to the successful operations of his squadron and upheld the highest traditions of the military service.
