The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) George W. King (ASN: 0-1294486), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 September 1950 in the Hyopchon-Kochang rear, Korea. The progress of the battalion lead elements during their advance from Hyopchon to Kochang was so rapid that a substantial number of the overrun enemy had fled to the hills. The bypassed enemy forces had established three roadblocks after the passage of the battalion’s main body along that route. Captain King was ordered to eliminate these roadblocks utilizing the battalion headquarters company as the attacking force. Through his inspirational example of daring, and disregard for the intense enemy machine gun and small arms fire, Captain King successfully led the partially trained, administrative personnel in the accomplishment of their mission. Exposing himself to severe enemy fire he repeatedly rallied his troops, overcoming all resistance encountered. Through his audacity and skillful leadership, his force was able to kill thirty and capture forty-two of the enemy, while keeping the casualties within his own unit to a minimum. The gallantry and inspiring leadership displayed by Captain King on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
