Kimbrell (ASN: 0-358524), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 26 thru 28 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. During this period the 1st Battalion was attacking a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. Throughout the three days of fighting, Colonel Kimbrell continually exposed himself to intense enemy fire as he directed his unit forward. When the casualties were heaviest and hostile fire most severe, he daringly moved about his men’s positions encouraging them. His heroic example and personal courage inspired them with the will and fortitude to hold the bitterly contested terrain until reinforcements arrived and ultimately gained the objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Colonel Kimbrell on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) George W. Kimbrell (ASN: 0-358524), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action during on 26 May 1951 in the vicinity of Tari-gol, Korea. On that date his battalion was in fast pursuit of the enemy and was advancing rapidly with the mission of capturing Hyon-ni, a critical road junction in the enemy’s escape route. Although the enemy was fighting a vicious delaying action and was covering the route of advance with deadly small arms and mortar fire, Colonel Kimbrell positioned himself with the leading elements and personally directed the advance until he was painfully wounded and was evacuated. His aggressive and courageous leadership achieved a much more rapid advance and as a result was extremely costly to the enemy. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Colonel Kimbrell reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
