The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) George W. Kimbrell (ASN: 0-358524), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 26 thru 28 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. During this period the 1st Battalion was attacking a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. Throughout the three days of fighting, Colonel Kimbrell continually exposed himself to intense enemy fire as he directed his unit forward. When the casualties were heaviest and hostile fire most severe, he daringly moved about his men’s positions encouraging them. His heroic example and personal courage inspired them with the will and fortitude to hold the bitterly contested terrain until reinforcements arrived and ultimately gained the objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Colonel Kimbrell on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
