The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles P. Kuczynski (ASN: 0-2263001), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 May 1951, in the vicinity of Sagol, Korea. On this day, Company A was on a patrol into enemy territory when they ran into enemy resistance. Lieutenant Kuczynski, platoon leader, and his men were acting as right flank security. Although his platoon was short two squads, it engaged the enemy. Armed with a pistol, Lieutenant Kuczynski killed three enemy soldiers. His courage spurred his men on to repulse the superior enemy force. Because of his expert leadership and aggressiveness the company’s route of withdrawal was not cut off. This outstanding display of gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
