The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Corporal George A. Kern (ASN: US-52037075), United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, on 20 May 1951 in the vicinity of Sonshon, Korea. On that day Company C was being attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. Corporal Kern, an ammunition bearer, left his position of comparative safety to go after ammunition. In doing so he was continually exposed to enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire. On his third trip he was wounded in the left arm. He refused evacuation and disregarded his painful wound to continue to carry the much needed ammunition to the company. Only after the enemy was forced to withdraw, after four hours of fighting, did he consent to be evacuated for medical aid. Corporal Kern’s devotion to duty and his heroism reflect great credit on himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 29 (January 19, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George A. Kern (ASN: US-52037075), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date elements of Company C were supporting the attack of friendly troops against enemy positions. As the attacking forces neared the objective, their supply of hand grenades diminished. Sergeant Kern, a squad leader, immediately volunteered to re-supply the unit. Upon delivering the grenades, rather than returning to his company, he remained with the assaulting unit. As the engagement continued, Sergeant Kern repeatedly exposed himself to the hostile fire while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. Although painfully wounded in the ensuing action, he refused to be evacuated and remained on the hill until the objective was secured. The gallantry in action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Kern on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
