The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class William E. Kensinger (ASN: RA-13287305), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 2 April 1951, near Changhi, Korea, Sergeant Kensinger’s platoon was occupying defensive positions when it was viciously attacked by a large heavily armed enemy force which succeeded in overrunning the position, causing the unit to become disorganized. Quickly cognizant of the serious situation, Sergeant Kensinger organized a group of men and led them in an attack against the advancing enemy. After their ammunition supply was nearly exhausted Sergeant Kensinger ordered his unit back to prepared positions while he remained behind and covered the withdrawal. Sergeant Kensinger upon returning to the position, secured some hand grenades, and dashed out under the intense fire to combat the hostile forces, so confusing them that they retreated. Sergeant Kensinger’s gallantry and boldness reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
