The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Arthur Kenolio (ASN: RA-10104616), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 February 1951 in the vicinity of Twin Tunnels, Korea. Company L was defending high ground taken the preceding night. Private Kenolio’s squad was placed in an outpost position to warn against the enemy attack and to deploy the enemy. When the enemy attacked he gave the alarm and opened fire on him, forcing him to deploy and enabling the squad to withdraw. Private Kenolio voluntarily remained in position to cover the withdrawal of two other units until his rifle ammunition and hand grenades were expended. Obtaining more hand grenades from the rear, he returned to his position and threw hand grenades at the enemy until he was mortally wounded. The gallant conduct of Private Kenolio reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
