The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George E. Kennedy (ASN: 0-2262311), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date his company was ordered to counterattack and seize an enemy-held hill which commanded the main route of withdrawal for elements of the EIGHTH United States Army. Lieutenant Kennedy, the weapons platoon leader, reorganized his unit into a rifle platoon and led his men up the enemy-held hill. When the advance of the company was halted by intense hostile mortar and automatic weapons fire, he fearlessly pushed forward alone into the enemy fire. His audacious action was such a source of inspiration to his men that they rallied and, resuming the assault, followed him toward their objective. Throughout the attack, Lieutenant Kennedy exposed himself with complete disregard for his personal safety as he directed the fire of his platoon. His inspiring leadership was greatly instrumental to the success of his company in driving the enemy from their hill-top position. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Lieutenant Kenned reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
