Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 761 (November 25, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles J. Kennedy (ASN: US-52072918), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Sergeant Kennedy was a squad leader in a platoon which had the mission to secure a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. Disregarding the determined hostile fire directed at him, he led his men forward. Upon nearing the hostile positions he was informed that he was to act as platoon sergeant due to numerous friendly casualties. Realizing that his unit could not complete its assigned mission if it suffered more casualties he assaulted the hub of enemy resistance. His dogged determination and example of bravery under fire were an inspiration to his men who followed him through the deadly enemy fire to secure the objective. Although under fire from the by-passed enemy positions, Sergeant Kennedy moved among his men and directed their fire in silencing the remainder of hostile resistance. His outstanding devotion to duty and courageous action were highly responsible for the success of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Kennedy on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
