The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Hiram Ladislus Ke (ASN: RA-29045288), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 5th Regimental Combat Team, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Saip-ojan-gang, Korea, on 28 November 1950. Sergeant First Class Ke’s company was withdrawing to a secondary position in an effort to defend high ground on the approach to Chonju against a numerically superior enemy force. As Platoon Sergeant, he was informed by his squad leaders that the platoon positions had been overrun and they were withdrawing. On learning this he left the Platoon Company Command Post and moved to the left flank of the position to reorganize the squads. He led the platoon in a daring counterattack which temporarily drove the enemy back. In his gallant attempt to lead the squads back to their original positions he was fatally wounded. Sergeant First Class Ke’s actions inspired great confidence and an esprit de corps in the platoon which enabled it to make an orderly withdrawal after slowing the enemy attack. By his utter disregard for his own personal safety he undoubtedly saved his platoon from complete annihilation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant First Class Ke, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
