The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Mike M. Kason (ASN: RA-19330882), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 September 1950, in the vicinity of Cebreli, Korea. On that date a large enemy force attacked an observation post which his squad was operating on the right flank of the regiment. Friendly units one thousand yards to the left were forced to withdraw under heavy enemy pressure. When enemy infantry attacked his observation post, Sergeant Kason remained in position with his men to continue sending reports to his headquarters and cover the withdrawal of elements to his left. With the position of his squad about to be encircled and overrun, Sergeant Kason ordered his men to withdraw, while he remained behind to fight until his men were safely out. When foot troops overran his position, Sergeant Kason had to fight his way out of the trap in hand-to-hand combat. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Kason reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
