The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Charles J. Kasicki (ASN: RA-36698689), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 April 1952, elements of Company I were assigned the mission of attacking a strongly defended enemy outpost near Maktae-dong, Korea. This hill concealed numerous machine gun and reverse slope mortar positions which had recently inflicted heavy casualties on friendly troops. The second assault wave had just occupied the first enemy trench when suddenly a hostile weapon on the right commenced a deadly hail of fire. Realizing that the weapon would have to be silenced to prevent severe casualties to the assault force, Sergeant Kasicki, second in command of the second assault wave, completely disregarded his personal safety as he moved toward the hostile position. Approximately fifteen yards from the bunker he rose to an upright position to assault the foe but was immediately knocked to the ground by an enemy hand grenade. Undaunted, he arose and commenced firing his weapon with such accuracy and intensity that the foe was forced to remain under cover. Taking advantage of the enemy’s confusion, Sergeant Kasicki advanced to within five yards of the bunker, throwing grenades into it until the position was completely neutralized. Sergeant Kasicki’s outstanding heroism and initiative were instrumental to the success of the mission and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
