The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Walter W. Kasdorf (ASN: 0-1690748), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Yongu-ri, Korea, on 22 October 1950. When leading a thirty man patrol into the village, Captain Kasdorf was informed by friendly villagers that there were some enemy in the village and that a large enemy force was due to arrive shortly. He led his patrol into the village and directed a thorough search of all the houses, capturing several enemy soldiers. As the patrol was preparing to ret urn to friendly lines with five prisoners, Captain Kasdorf observed the expected column of enemy approaching the village. He decided to make a daring attempt to capture the enemy force although it outnumbered his patrol by more than six to one. He deployed his patrol throughout the village and when the enemy column moved within small arms range, he boldly attacked himself and without regard for personal safety moved forward to a position from which he could converse with the enemy commander to order his troops to lay down their arms as they were surrounded by a battalion of American troops who would an nihilate them at the first sign of a fight. The enemy commander, unaware of the actual strength of the American patrol agreed to the surrender and with 200 of his troops was disarmed and taken prisoner. Captain Kasdorf’s bold and courageous actions reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
