The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Joseph Marion Kanney (ASN: RA-13357886), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, during F Company’s attack on Hill 400, the Second Platoon was subjected to and pinned down by intense enemy fire. Private Kanney, aware of the seriousness of the situation, voluntarily lifted his machine gun and, with the ammunition belt draped over his shoulder, aggressively advanced upon the foe firing the weapon. While so engaged, he was wounded by the enemy fire; but, undaunted, he relentlessly pressed forward. Upon expending the machine gun’s ammunition, Private Kanney picked up a rifle and continued to charge up the hill toward the objective. Inspired by his singular courage, the members of his platoon rose and followed him in an assault which terminated with the securing of the objective. Private Kanney’s superb gallantry and fearless initiative reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
