The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Edward J. Kania (ASN: RA-42148313), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 July 1950, near Sangnyong-ni, Korea, when the 3d Platoon was brought under heavy fire by hostile infantry and five tanks, Sergeant First Class Kania by personally shifting his automatic weapons enabled the platoon to repulse the enemy forces. On three occasions, he faced the concerted fire to move weapons to more advantageous positions. During the height of the action, he carried a wounded man one hundred yards across an exposed area and although he was twice thrown to the ground by explosion of shells, he succeeded in bringing the man to safety. Sergeant First Class Kania’s valorous and steadfast devotion to duty and to his comrades reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
