The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Samuel Goodhue Kail (ASN: 0-22072), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 February 1951, near Yu-li, Korea, Colonel Kail, 2d Battalion Commander, led his unit in an attack on well-defended enemy positions. When the advance elements were subjected to intense hostile fire, Colonel Kail deployed his troops in a pincers movement. Skillfully maintaining excellent coordination between the enveloping units, he continually exposed himself to enemy observation and fire and finally directed a fierce assault against the hostile emplacements. Colonel Kail’s heroic leadership materially contributed to the success of the mission and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
