The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Samuel Goodhue Kail (ASN: 0-22072), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 February 1951, near Yu-li, Korea, Colonel Kail, 2d Battalion Commander, led his unit in an attack on well-defended enemy positions. When the advance elements were subjected to intense hostile fire, Colonel Kail deployed his troops in a pincers movement. Skillfully maintaining excellent coordination between the enveloping units, he continually exposed himself to enemy observation and fire and finally directed a fierce assault against the hostile emplacements. Colonel Kail’s heroic leadership materially contributed to the success of the mission and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.

Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry), [then Major] Samuel Goodhue Kail (ASN: 0-22072), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 December 1950 at Huksu-ri, Korea, an estimated force of two enemy regiments attacked the 2d Battalion over-running the defense positions. The battalion was forced to withdraw due to the overwhelmingly numerically superior enemy pressure. During the withdrawal Colonel Kail, heedless of his personal safety while under withering small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire, continually exposed himself in order to reorganize his men and direct their successful withdrawal. He accomplished this by walking up and down fire swept positions calmly giving orders and assisting his men. Colonel Kail’s cool, daring leadership instilled confidence in his men. His intrepid heroism on this occasion is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
