Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 103 (February 21, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John S. Kadderly (ASN: 0-1341169), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company [then Company I], 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Kullyong-Kogae, Korea. On this date, while attacking strategic enemy hill positions on Heartbreak Ridge, Company I encountered intense hostile fire. As the unit neared the objective, resistance increased until it was impossible to advance further. Acting immediately, and without regard for his own personals safety, Lieutenant Kadderly exposed himself to the heavy fire in a bold movement around the enemy’s flank. Moving across the fire-swept terrain, he reached a position from which he was able to throw grenades and fire point blank into the enemy emplacements, killing the occupants. Although wounded in the initial stage of the attack, he refused evacuation, which served to inspire his men in overcoming all barriers. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Kadderly on this occasion contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and is in accordance with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
