The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert J. Jurkowski (ASN: RA-16311211), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 24 November 1950 in the vicinity of Sinjung, Korea. On that date Sergeant Jurkowski was a member of a group which was forced to withdraw to escape annihilation by a numerically superior enemy. The route of withdrawal was cut off by the enemy who had established a road block consisting of two machine guns and supporting rifle fire on the left flank of the withdrawing column. Sergeant Jurkowski voluntarily and with complete disregard for his personal safety exposed himself to heavy enemy fire and dashed forward in a single-handed assault of one of the hostile emplacements. Although he was seriously wounded as he advanced under point blank machine gun and sniper fire, he continued his undaunted charge until he succeeded in destroying the machine gun nest. His heroic action enabled the other members of the group to destroy the remaining enemy force and continue their withdrawal in safety. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Jurkowski reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
