Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 1099 (July 21, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edward J. Joseph (ASN: 33142020), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 13 to 26 March 1944. Fully cognizant of the dangers involved, Corporal Joseph repeatedly volunteered to man an observation post and direct mortar fire against Japanese positions. When communication between the observer and mortars was disrupted, Corporal Joseph restored the lines under constant enemy fire. Wounded by a bursting shell, he continued to adjust fire until medical aid men evacuated him. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Joseph, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
