The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private William Theodore Jones (ASN: RA-14359545), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, Private Jones, was laying down a base of fire with his machine gun in close support of the second platoon, Company I, 3d Battalion, which was attacking an enemy-held position on Hill 361. Because of the terrain features, it was necessary for him to move his machine gun forward on several occasions in the face of withering enemy fire so that he could lend close support to the assaulting elements. When Private Jones’s machine gun was put out of action by enemy fire, he seized a rifle from a fallen comrade and continued lending close support. Noticing that an automatic rifleman was wounded in the assault, he unhesitatingly and with no regard for his own personal safety dashed across completely exposed terrain in an effort to regain the automatic weapon and continue his supporting fire. Although he was a target for an intense hail of enemy bullets, he courageously continued toward his objective until he was hit and mortally wounded. Private Jones’ gallant actions and outstanding devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
