The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Q. Jones (ASN: 0-1934933), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 21 May and during the early morning hours of 22 May 1953, a raiding party of Company B had the mission of engaging and destroying the enemy in the vicinity of Pung-Myon, Korea. When the raiding party was subjected to an attack by a numerically superior hostile force, Lieutenant Jones called for artillery fire to help support the friendly elements. While calling for artillery fire, he observed hostile forces creeping up to his position. Lieutenant Jones immediately threw hand grenades at them until the enemy soldiers were forced to withdraw. When his platoon returned to friendly lines to reorganize for a counterattack, he remained in position and helped administer first aid to the wounded and evacuate them. When he was informed by a member of his platoon that one man was missing, Lieutenant Jones left the comparative safety of his covered position and searched the battlefield to locate the missing man. Lieutenant Jones’ outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
