Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 291 (October 14, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John Paul Jones, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 18 July 1943. When the company’s advance guard was ambushed resulting in several wounded lying helplessly exposed to enemy machine gun fire, Private Jones went forward with two other soldiers to administer first aid and to evacuate these wounded. Despite this Private Jones pushed on until he was pinned down by the hostile fire and forced to remain in his position overnight. At daybreak he succeeded in assisting three wounded men to safety. Thus, by his personal courage and aggressive action Private Jones saved the lives of several of his fellow soldiers. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
