Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 289 (July 17, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jack Jones (ASN: 0-975603), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 1 June 1951, near Sansong-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Jones’ platoon was assigned the mission of leading an attack against a series of well dug-in enemy emplacements on a commanding ridge. Attempting to surprise the enemy, Lieutenant Jones stealthily led his unit up the hill, making the maximum use of cover and concealment. While approaching from the flank, he noticed a well-concealed enemy platoon which had not been detected in a pre-attack reconnaissance. Almost immediately the friendly unit was subjected to a fierce barrage of mortar, automatic weapons, and small arms fire. Realizing that this group hindered K Company’s advance on the original objective, Lieutenant Jones fearlessly led his platoon forward in a savage assault. Inspired by his dauntless actions, the platoon overran the enemy positions and, during the raging hand-to-hand engagement, 46 enemy were killed and 22 prisoners captured. Lieutenant Jones’ gallant and aggressive actions reflects great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
