The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles Jones (ASN: RA-16293467), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 17 September 1950, near Haman, Korea, Private First Class Jones volunteered to cover the displacement of his unit which was under attack by a vastly numerically superior hostile force. Despite the intense fire and heavy enemy attacks, he remained in his position to deliver effective fire, thereby greatly facilitating the safe and orderly withdrawal of the remainder of his unit. Private First Class Jones’ courage, initiative and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
