The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Herbert H. Johnston (ASN: US-55041444), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 May 1951, in the vicinity of Kunmul-gol, Korea. On that day Company E was subjected to a fanatical attack by a numerically superior enemy force. The platoon of which Private Johnston was a member was situated on the forward slope of the hill. Because of the intensity of the enemy attack, it was forced to withdraw to higher ground. Private Johnston volunteered to remain in his position to assist the automatic rifle man to cover the platoon’s withdrawal and slow down the enemy attack. His actions accounted for a large number of enemy casualties while his own platoon suffered none. He did not leave his position until ordered to do so by his platoon leader. Private Johnston’s example of bravery and heroism was instrumental in turning the enemy attack and caused the enemy force to become disorganized and inefficient. His gallantry in action and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
