Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 181 (June 17, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Thomas C. Johnson (ASN: ER-18262091), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Pungchon-ni, Korea. On that date, Company K was in defensive positions awaiting an attack. Sergeant Johnson, while checking his platoon positions, discovered that an enemy force had overrun an observation post in front of Company K. He immediately redeployed his platoon to meet the threat of a possible enemy attack from the flank, and then asked for a volunteer. Without thought of his own safety, he moved out to scout the enemy and learn the disposition of the hostile force. Having secured the desired information, he reported his findings to the company commander, then voluntarily led the counterattack. The gallant conduct displayed by Sergeant Johnson reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
