The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert M. Johnson (ASN: ER-55015318), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 February 1951 in the vicinity of Majong-ni, Korea. The platoon of which Private Johnson was a member had pushed to the top of a hill and was ordered to withdraw to temporary defense positions on an adjacent ridge. The withdrawal of the platoon was covered by the squad led by Private Johnson. After reaching the new position, Private Johnson noticed in front of him a wounded man being assisted by a comrade. Because of the intensity of the enemy fire, the two men were unable to reach the platoon’s lines. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Private Johnson fearlessly leaped to his feet and charged into the deadly fire of the enemy. Rushing beyond the wounded man and his bearer, he engaged the enemy with rifle fire, thus deliberately drawing the hostile fire away from theirhis two comrades and upon himself. As a result the wounded soldier and his helper were able to reach a position of safety. The gallantry displayed by Private Johnson reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
