Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 68 (March 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Robert L. Johnson (ASN: RA-33444566), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 February 1951, near Sokon-on, Korea, Company K was attacking a fanatical enemy in an effort to take Hill 319. Many casualties, resulting from heavy small arms and mortar fire, were sustained by the company. As they approached the hill, the platoon leader was seriously wounded. Sergeant Johnson immediately assumed command of the platoon, and personally led a flanking attack on the enemy. Throughout the attack he constantly exposed himself to intense, withering enemy fire coming from an enemy with unlimited observation. His inspiring words of encouragement, and his fearless and aggressive leadership encouraged his men, and contributed decisively to the complete success of the operation. The initiative, fearlessness, and gallantry under fire displayed by Sergeant Johnson reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
