Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 22 (January 12, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) James Allen Johnson (ASN: 0-50638), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 72d Engineer Combat Company, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 10 August 1950, near Kogan-ni, Korea, when the regimental command post was attacked by a strong hostile force, Lieutenant Johnson was ordered to move his platoon to a nearby enemy-occupied hill and reduced a hostile road block. He directed accurate fire of a 2.36 rocket launcher on the hill and then on the roadblock, causing the enemy to flee. Observing a large group of enemy troops assembling on the opposite side of the hill to attack the command post, he moved to an exposed position to observe and direct mortar fire. During the ensuing battle he was blown off his feet by a concussion grenade but continued to direct fire until the enemy had been completely routed. Lieutenant Johnson’s conspicuous courage, grim determination and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
