The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Howard E. Johnson (ASN: RA-17275945), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Company, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Okchong-ni, Korea, on 10 March 1951. The enemy, attacking in overwhelming numbers, forced Company E. 19th Infantry Regiment, to withdraw from its positions on a small ridgeline overlooking the village, to the high ground in the rear. Corporal Johnson, a Medical Aid Man attached to the company, upon hearing of a wounded man who was missing from the company, with complete disregard for his own personal safety voluntarily proceeded alone, in the face of heavy enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire to the positions just vacated. Upon reaching the area, he quickly located and administered first aid to the wounded man. As the enemy was closing in and the fire growing more intense, acting with cool deliberation and unmindful of the enemy fire that was falling all around hm, he placed the wounded man upon his shoulders and step by step, over rugged terrain swept by enemy fire, carried his helpless burden a distance of 300 yards back to friendly liens. Corporal Johnson’s courageous actions and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Medical Service.
