The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Earl D. Johnson (ASN: RA-38383081), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 February 1951, near Mohyon-Myon, Korea, the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, had the mission of attacking and securing Hill 328. The flat open approaches to the objective were swept by a hail of withering fire which inflicted many casualties. Sergeant Johnson fearlessly exposed himself to intense sniper fire while covering an aid man, who was administering first aid to a wounded soldier, and then assisted him to evacuate the wounded soldier. Rejoining his platoon he came under heavy automatic weapons and hand grenade fire, which caused many more casualties. Sergeant Johnson, with utter disregard for his personal safety, and heedless of the enemy fire, then personally evacuated six wounded men. Each trip necessitating him to carry the wounded soldier on his back a distance of approximately forty yards. Making twelve trips across this open terrain he successfully evacuated those wounded to positions of safety. The gallantry of Sergeant Johnson reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
