The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Donald T. Johnson (ASN: US-51121323), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 11 July 1952, near “Heartbreak Ridge”, Korea, Sergeant Johnson was with a patrol which set off a hidden mine which seriously wounded five patrol members. Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Johnson volunteered to aid in the evacuation, although he realized there were other mines in the vicinity. He repeatedly carried many litters of wounded up a slope. While helping to evacuate the wounded, Sergeant Johnson was severely injured by the detonation of a second mine, resulting in his death. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
