Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 687 (November 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Christopher B. Johnson (ASN: US-53009903), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 October 1951 in the vicinity of Sadanggol, Korea. On this date, while his company was engaging an enemy force, Corporal Johnson, a platoon runner, was acting in the capacity of rifleman, radioman, and ammunition bearer. Undaunted by his responsibilities, he continually advanced through intense hostile mortar fire delivering effective fire from his carbine, with one hand. During a mission, an enemy shell burst beside him and although suffering from concussion, Corporal Johnson continued his mission. Later, while delivering a vital message to an adjoining unit, he was halted by an enemy sniper’s fire. Crawling on his hands and knees until the sniper was in sight, he immediately disposed of him. Corporal Johnson’s dauntless courage and devotion to duty were instrumental in the successful accomplishment of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Johnson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
