The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Bill D. Johnson (ASN: RA-18352803), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 May 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. Corporal Johnson, a machine gunner, was a member of a patrol sent to break up an enemy road block. As they arrived at the scene they were brought under intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, forcing the patrol to a halt. Determined to overcome the resistance, Corporal Johnson daringly exposed himself to the enemy fire and brought heavy machine gun fire upon the enemy. In return, his position drew heavy fire and Corporal Johnson was wounded. In spite of his painful wound, he continued to serve his gun until the other men were able to take more favorable firing positions and until a wounded comrade was evacuated to safety. His courageous stand in the face of great odds was responsible for saving many lives. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Johnson reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
