The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur G. Johnson, Jr. (ASN: 0-425784), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 14 August 1943, when he fearlessly left the safety of his foxhole on two separate occasions to advance under intense enemy fire and bring two wounded men back to his own position where he was able to administer first aid as well as give them protection from enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
